Poloniny National park
POLONINY National Park is located in the east of Slovakia, spreads over to Ukraine and Poland, and is considered to be a significant biosphere area of Europe. The highest point of Poloniny is hill Kremenec, which connects the borders of all three states in one place.
The phenomenon of the Eastern Carpathians to be seen here is the so-called „poloniny“(from which the name of the national park was derived) – large flowering meadows located over the upper forest line.
The Poloniny is a territory with original extensive beech-fir primeval forests – Stužica, Hávešová and Rožok, which have been included in the UNESCO World Heritage List since 2007.
There is “The Dark Sky Park” located on its territory, which is one of Europe‘s darkest areas in terms of light pollution. It has an exceptionally low population density of only 9 inhabitants per km2. At the same time, it is the least visited national park in Slovakia, so the human impact on the environment is almost undetectable. The natural nighttime darkness and nightly biorhythms of all living organisms are not disturbed by the hustle of civilization. That is the cause of an extraordinary concentration of endemic and endangered species of plants, fungi and animals. Poloniny is therefore naturally rich in fauna and flora. The area is also well-known for occurrence of large wild animals: brown bears, wolves, lynxes, wild cats and elks.
POLONINY National Park is part of the International Carpathian Biosphere Reserve recognized by UNESCO in 1993 – the only one in the world to extend over the territories of three states (with a total size of 164 190 ha).
Programme CLASSIC
following is an example of program for routes in the CLASSIC package, with a duration of 3 days
The trekkers will be accommodated at the KREMENEC guesthouse, located in the center of POLONINY National Park, in the picturesque village of Nová Sedlica. Every day, together with the trekking guide, they set out for an adventure in the wilderness and then return to the starting point in the afternoon or evening.
Nová Sedlica → Forest Stužica → Easternmost point of Slovakia: Kremenec → Trojhraničie → Nová Sedlica
We will wake up in the center of Poloniny National Park, in the easternmost village in Slovakia. From Nová Sedlica we set out into the wilderness along the edge of the primeval forest of Stužica (UNESCO), which is the largest Slovak primeval forest with area of 615 hectares. Huge beech trees reaching up to the clouds, fallen trees, nature’s sounds echoing from the depths of the forest and the strong smell of wood that makes you certain of the mysterious atmosphere of this place. No photograph or video can truly capture the power of this magical nature. You have to experience it firsthand. The spring of Stužica River, which erupts in this forest holds incredibly clean water, refreshes the lingering earthly scent around us. Later, we ascend to Kremenec (1207 m above sea level), the highest hill of Poloniny, where Trojhraničie, a geographical triangle linking Slovakia, Ukraine and Poland is located.
Nová Sedlica → Zbojský Brook Valley → Riaba Rock Reservation → Riaba Rock → Primeval Mountain ridge → Ďurkovec → Poloniny Pastures → Nová Sedlica
Our route leads along Zbojský Brook Valley, leading from Nová Sedlica to the top of Riaba Rock. It is the longest uninhabited valley in Poloniny, famous for the legends of three women that will enrich your tour of the Poloniny. The footpath mostly follows the trail of a former forest narrow-gauge railway built in 1908. Riaba Rock is an exceptional sightseeing point, probably the most beautiful sightseeing spot in Poloniny. From this point, it is possible to see Zbojský Brook Valley, villages of Nová Sedlice and Zboj, Veľký Bukovec ridge, Stužická river basin, Stinská ridge and the Vihorlat mountain range. In a good weather, it is possible to see the Ukrainian mountain range called Polonina Rovna and the majestic shields of the Vysoké Tatry. After enjoying the breathtaking scenery, we continue along the ridge zone of the forest to the Ďurkovec mountain which hides the beautiful preserved Poloniny meadows.
NOVÁ SEDLICA → Village of Zboj → Slovak-Ukrainian border zone → Forest Rožok → Wooden Church Uličské Krivé → Zbojský Brook Meanders → Abandoned Mountain Railway → NOVÁ SEDLICA
Today we start with the village of Zboj, which lies in the northeastern part of Bukovské vrchy, in the lap of beautiful Carpathian countryside in the Zbojský Brook Valley. From the southeast it borders with Ukraine and form the north with Poland. In the village, there is a military cemetery from the 1st World War, the mineral spring “Kvasna voda” and the first discovered cave in the region. Rožok Primeval Forest (UNESCO) forms the conclusion of the valley with wavy side ridges and several springs. The difficult accessibility of the site was likely to make a significant contribution to preservation of the forest. The main wood is the beech, only in the higher parts of the locality there is a rare mountain maple to be found. We will follow the route to the village of Uličská Krivé, where we visit the beautiful Greek-Catholic wooden church and continue along the meanders of Zbojský Brook. Its flowing waters form a habitat for a significant number of fish, of which almost half belongs to rare and endangered species.
