Banská Štiavnica, Hronsek and Banská Bystrica
We will leave the capital and move to Central Slovakia. First, we will visit the historical town of Banská Štiavnica a town where Habsburg empress Mária Terézia established the first technical university in the world, and thanks to the vast resources of precious metals, it became the treasury of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. With the lantern in hand, we will visit one of the last traversable mines where we will listen to the old miners’ stories and understand their hard work. After that, we will have refreshing lunch in one of the most beautiful Slovak squares.
Our next stop is the very heart of Slovakia, Banská Bystrica. There you can find marvelous Evangelical wooden church in Hronsek, considered an architectural wonder because of its entirely wooden construction, not using a single metal component.
In town Banská Bystrica itself, we will have a sightseeing tour around the square and visit the Museum of the Slovak National Uprising and finally enjoy Bashavel, an evening of folk music and dance accompanied with tasting of traditional Slovak cuisine and alcohol.
Špania Dolina, Vlkolínec and Tatranská Lomnica
The day begins with a walk through the ancient mining village of Špania Dolina, betwixt between two national parks.
Later, we will have a delicious lunch in a typical Slovak chalet. Then we will transfer to the outdoor folklore museum of Vlkolínec. This picturesque village enchants with its own original historical architecture and atmosphere of days long gone.
Our journey will lead us to the center of Vysoké Tatry, the highest mountain range of Central Europe. We will spend the night in a traditional village of Tatranská Lomnica.
Dobšinská Ice Cave, Kežmarok, Levoča and Spiš
After a hearty breakfast, we will explore the icy kingdom created by millennia of natural activities. Dobšinská Ice Cave is the deepest ice cave in the world and its beauty is guaranteed to captivate your soul.
On this day, we will also admire the wood carving masterpieces exhibited in the wooden church of Kežmarok with a dominant, hand-carved wooden altar created by master Paul of Levoča. This altar achieved world´s renown due to its imposing height of 18.62 meters.
The day will continue with an excursion of one of the largest castles in Europe, the Spišský Castle.
Bardejov, Hervatov and Košice
A new day bids us welcome in the medieval town of Bardejov, which has managed to preserve its original architectural character.
In the village of Hervatov in Šariš region, we will have chance to see the oldest and most preserved wooden church – the Church of St. Francis of Assisi, built in the 15th century. Furthermore, this church houses wonderful gothic icons.
Then we will continue to Košice, the second largest city of Slovakia and the recipient of European Capital of Culture 2013 award. The city is breathing with its magnificent history, with its dominant feature being the easternmost Gothic cathedral in Europe, Cathedral of St. Elizabeth. We will have enough time to enjoy the atmosphere of this city and after fine evening dinner, we will have a taste of the world famous Tokaj wines.
Ochtinská Aragonite Cave and Detva
After enjoying a hospitable Košice atmosphere, we will move to the Ochtinská Aragonite Cavern. The aragonite decoration of the caves is one of its kind and it can’t be seen anywhere else in Europe, the only similar formations can be found in Mexico and Argentina.
After this unique experience, we will sample a bit the Slovak folklore in town of Detva, where we will have the opportunity to try out and take photos in typical Slovak costumes. You will also listen to charming tunes of fujara, a typical Slovak musical instrument which is another example of rich folk culture in Slovakia. Our journey to explore Slovakia´s UNESCO monuments ends in Detva and then will return to capital city of Bratislava.
