The landmarks of Bratislava

The Best of Slovakia Tour begins in the capital. The city of Bratislava, a city between the western and Eastern Europe, is a hidden gem waiting to be discovered. Modern bustling city with a tiny but magical historic center teems with an unforgettable atmosphere. We will walk across the cobbly squares, under the Michalská gate, we will see Bratislava Castle, Slovak National Theater, St. Martin Dome, the coronation seat of Hungarian kings and many others. An 85-meter-high view from the UFO restaurant, located at the bridge of the Slovak National Uprising, is one of the most iconic symbols of this young European city. A visit to the Danubiana Museum of Modern Art is also captivating. Besides the exhibits, it also has a very innovative design and is situated at rather unusual place. Danubiana is located on an islet of the Danube River between two states – Slovakia and Hungary. The evening atmosphere of the city in the bustling streets of the historic center full of different bars will provide an excellent kick start for your trip around Slovakia.

Bojnice, Čičmany and Terchová

We will leave for Bojnice, where an excursion to the romantic Bojnice castle, a castle regularly included into lists of world´s most beautiful castles, is waiting for us. It will enchant you with its look, architecture and exhibits. You can learn the story of Count Pálfy, the former castle owner. The tears appearing at his sarcophagus, were a great mystery in the 90’s.
We will also visit the village of Čičmany, a world-famous site of folk architecture reservation. There are exceptionally preserved historical settlements, reminiscent of gingerbread houses known from fairy tales, because of their geometric ornamental decoration.
At the end of the day, you will be greeted at the traditional Slovak chalet in Terchová where you can taste Slovak specialties including various dairy products.

Lomnický štít and Starý Smokovec

On the third day, we will travel to the mountain range of the High Tatras, which are part of the European Carpathian Mountains. The High Tatras are the pride of Slovakia and they also hold the title of the world’s smallest highlands. We will take the cable car above the clouds, to the second largest shield of these majestic mountains, Lomnický Štít (2634 AMSL), from where we will enjoy the gorgeous panoramic view. Lomnický Štít is the site of an observatory, the highest working place in Central Europe. We will spend the night in the oldest Tatras village, Starý Smokovec, right under the majestic Tatras shields.

Spišský Castle, Košice and Tokaj

We will visit Spišký Castle, one of the largest castle complexes in Europe. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the panoramic view from its walls is breathtaking.
We will also travel to Košice, the metropolis of eastern Slovakia and discover its landmark, the Cathedral of St. Elisabeth. It is the largest cathedral in Slovakia and at the same time the easternmost Gothic building.
The journey across Eastern Slovakia wouldn’t be complete without a visit to its most famous wine region in Slovakia. Tokaj belongs to the most important wine region in the world, it boasts the oldest cellar complex, listed in the list of national cultural monuments. It consists of three separate cellars, with an archive of Tokaj wines with a total length of 2 500 meters. This cellar complex was dug out in the 15th century, but the oldest corridor of this cellar complex contains a rare original inscription in the glacier, which suggests that the cellar foundations are even older. Tasting of the most delicious wine accompanied with quality food is a must that will be awaiting you in a special wine cellar.

Domica Cave, Banská Bystrica and Špania dolina

This day features a unique Domica Cave will provide an exceptional cruise on the underground river. The cavern is home to 16 species of bats, it houses amazing cave drum formations and significant archaeological finds. Its uniqueness was also recognized as an UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Another stop is the historic town of Banská Bystrica, which will surprise you with its architecture and location in the embrace of the mountains.
The nearby village of Špania Dolina is a picturesque village, which entices every visitor with its beautiful countryside and architecture. Here we are going to spend our last evening together, having Bashavel, a traditional Slovak folk party, accompanied by live music and the program that will not leave you sitting in the corner. During the evening, you will have the opportunity to taste various Slovak traditional dishes, drinks and the evening will feature members of folklore artistic ensemble that will show you how to dance some traditional Slovak dances.

You will explore a wonderful town of Banská Štiavnica, a place included in the UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is an inspiring place teeming with history and boasting a charming location around breathtaking countryside. The points of interest includes the Mining Museum with the opportunity to descend into an underground mine.
